DEFENDER 110 REBUILD:
A MODERN REBUILD WITH HERITAGE AT HEART.
MORE THAN JUST A REBUILD.
At Keith Gotts, every restoration or rebuild tells a story and this one starts with a vision. What began as a customer’s dream for a black-and-white utilitarian Defender 110 has evolved into a full-scale rebuild, handled with precision, craftsmanship, and decades of Land Rover expertise. We fulfilled a customers dream by building a beautiful high-quality Defender, that was thoroughly chosen and passionately rebuilt to suit our customers need.
This is how we brought it to life, step by step. To see a further gallery of works and images, you can find more on our
social media pages.
FROM VISION TO FOUNDATION.
Every great rebuild begins with imagination. Using Photoshop, we helped the owner explore several finishes to ensure there was no doubt or uncertainty in their decision. They chose from different combinations including all-black, all-white, and a bold black-and-white combination.
The final choice? A timeless two-tone black, white and grey contrast that pays homage to the Defender’s rugged heritage while giving it a contemporary edge. Once the design was approved, our technician Andy began stripping the vehicle down to its bones. He removed corroded panels, rusty parts and cleaned away years of buildup, to prepare the chassis for a new life.
"YOU CAN'T HAVE STYLE WITHOUT GRIT."
What many restoration and rebuild companies show you is the glamorous aftermath of the vehicle they've rebuilt. What they fail to show you is the hard-work of the expert technicians that get you to the end goal. You can't have style without grit. Every rebuild starts with dust, dirt, sweat and effort from hard-working technicians. The glamour comes later. The vehicle steals the show, however the technicians make the show happen.
A BRAND NEW BACKBONE.
Every restoration begins with a teardown and for this Defender, it started with a complete strip-down to bare metal. Once the original chassis was removed, the real transformation could begin.
A brand-new galvanised chassis was fitted and every joint, bracket, and cavity was prepped, treated, and sealed for long-term durability. This wasn’t just about giving the Defender a second life, it was about building it to last for decades to come.
With the rear wheels reattached, the Defender began to take shape once again and acted as a glimpse of what was to come.
BRINGING IT BACK TO LIFE.
This stage marked a turning point with the Defender itching closer to coming back to life.
The engine was refitted to its new chassis, something symbolic of reconnecting the heart to the backbone. The refinished bulkhead was mounted, and the front and rear wheels were secured, returning the Defender to a stance it hadn’t held in months.
Inside, the steering column, dash wiring loom, and speedometer cluster were installed with precision to ensure every system aligned perfectly. The fuse and relay panel, often called the Defender’s central nervous system, was carefully rebuilt and tested. Without it, even the most beautiful of builds won’t function properly. The windscreen frame was bolted into place, giving the Defender its distinctive shape once again. With wiring routed and tested, the vehicle began to look more like a finished machine than a collection of parts.
WHERE FORM MEETS FUNCTION.
With its core complete, the Defender began to look whole again. The rear panels and roof were installed, restoring the unmistakable silhouette of the 110. Every fixing, weld, and joint was tightened and checked to match the strength of the chassis beneath.
Then came the defining moment. The black-and-white paintwork, once a digital concept, was brought to life with modern precision and a timeless finish. Inside, new seatbelts, steering wheel, and radio transformed the cabin back into a space truly ready for adventure.
The finishing touches include: a silver chequer plate, wing-top air intake vent, new rear glass, tow hitch, bonnet fitment, rear fuel tank, windscreen wipers and Land Rover branded rubber mats which infused utilitarian charm, durability and personality.
The Defender now stood exactly as envisioned: rugged, refined, and unmistakably Land Rover.
INTO THE SUNSHINE.
With the front end complete, the Defender finally rolled out of the workshop and into the Hampshire countryside. After a successful test drive, it was time for its first photoshoot.
The new stance, wheels, and bonnet lines came together in perfect harmony. The LED headlights gave the Defender its bold face once again, to act as a symbol of how far it had come. The final stage? The final assembly of the rear body was to be installed by our trusted friends at
SVB.
This was a milestone moment, marking the first time the Defender had driven under its own power since the rebuild began. But it also marked the near conclusion of the rebuild, with the final bolt, bracket and brushstroke coming together to complete a true British icon.
BRINGING HERITAGE BACK TO LIFE.
The final phase of the rebuild took the project beyond our workshop and into the expert care of Southern Vehicle Bodies (SVB). They are a specialist coachbuilder known for producing high-quality commercial vehicle bodies. Their role was crucial in fitting the new tipper body.
A tipper body is a rear load bed that hydraulically lifts from the front, allowing the contents to be tipped out safely and efficiently. For a landscaping professional who handles fencing materials, aggregates, tree waste and even winter snow clearance, it’s the most practical and hard-wearing solution. SVB completed the installation with precision, aligning the structure, securing the hydraulics, and preparing the body for years of demanding use.
Once the tipper conversion was complete, the Defender returned to us for its final checks. The black-and-white colour scheme chosen at the beginning now runs seamlessly, all the way from the original front-end restoration through to the new commercial rear body.
After hundreds of hours of craftsmanship, wiring, mechanical refinement and careful assembly, the Defender 110 now stands as a fully rebuilt, purpose-built workhorse. It blends classic Land Rover character with dependable, modern utility and it's ready to serve a busy landscaping business for many years to come.
