RANGE ROVER TWIN TURBO ENGINE CHANGE
JOB TYPE: COMPLETE ENGINE REMOVAL, TWIN TURBO REPLACEMENT, RE-INSTALLATION.
WHY THIS JOB MATTERS (PURPOSE & BENEFITS)
In the high-performance world of Land Rover and Range Rover vehicles, twin turbo systems play a key role in delivering the drive-feel, power and refinement owners expect. At Keith Gotts we encounter these complex jobs because when a turbo system begins to fail it can impact performance, efficiency and reliability.
Replacing both turbos in a twin-turbo engine is a major operation. In this case we removed the engine, fitted new turbochargers, then re-installed the engine, followed by a full system clean and test. The result? Restored power, sharper throttle response, improved efficiency and emissions, and higher overall performance.
VEHICLE & SCOPE: WHAT WE TACKLED.
This specific job involved:
- Removal of the complete engine from the vehicle to gain full access to both turbocharger units.
- Removal of the old twin turbochargers.
- Installation of new twin turbochargers with genuine Land Rover parts.
- Cleaning of the subframe, oil pan and gearbox housing to remove years of built-up oil and residue (added value beyond just the turbo swap.)
- Reinstallation of the engine and reconnection of all systems.
- Replacement of supporting service items (oil, filters, feed pipes) and a full system inspection.
- Final diagnostic check and road test to ensure optimal performance.
01
REDUCED POWER & SLOWER ACCELERATION.
02
WHINING/HIGH PITCHED OR SIREN TYPE NOISE UNDER ACCELERATION.
03
SMOKE (BLUE OR GREY) FROM THE EXHAUST, OFTEN DUE TO OIL LEAKING INTO THE EXHAUST SYSTEM.
04
DASHBOARD WARNING LIGHT (CHECK ENGINE) AND/OR FAULT CODES ASSOCIATED WITH BOOST PRESSURE LOSS.
IGNORING THESE SIGNS CAN LEAD TO FURTHER DAMAGE. FOR EXAMPLE- OIL STARVATION, BEARING FAILURE, TURBO ROTOR DAMAGE OR EVEN ENGINE DAMAGE.
SYMPTOMS OF TURBO FAILURE THAT YOU NEED TO KNOW.
WHY TURBOS FAIL AND WHY PREVENTIVE SERVICE MATTERS.
01
YOU NEED PROPER ENGINE OIL SUPPLY AND CORRECT OIL QUALITY. A LACK OF CLEAN OIL OR OIL STARVATION CAN DAMAGE THE TURBO'S BEARINGS OR
ROTOR ASSEMBLY.
02
CONTAMINANTS OR FOREIGN OBJECTS ENTERING THE TURBO INLET OR TURBINE CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE TURBINE OR COMPRESSOR WHEELS.
03
EXCESSIVE TEMPERATURES, OVERSPEED OR BLOCKED SYSTEMS (LIKE A BLOCKED DPF, RESTRICTED AIR INTAKE) PLACE EXTRA STRESS ON THE TURBO COMPONENTS.
04
REGULAR SERVICING (OIL & FILTER CHANGES, AIR FEED SYSTEM CHECKS, INTERCOOLER AND BREATHING SYSTEM CLEANING) HELPS PREVENT TURBO FAILURE IN THE FIRST PLACE.
